CLEVELAND (Dec. 11, 2023)– The Urban League of Greater Cleveland (Cleveland, OH) is excited to present Pulitzer Prize winner, Robert Samuels, author of His Name Is George Floyd: One Man's Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice as the keynote speaker at the Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon (EOD) on Wednesday, December 6th (11:30 am) at the Huntington Cleveland Convention Center.

“The EOD Luncheon is a showcase and celebration of how we enact our mission through services, programs, partnerships, collaborations, and community leadership,” said ULGC President & CEO Marsha A. Mockabee. “Returning to our first in-person luncheon post-COVID feels especially celebratory, which will also include some special community updates and announcements.”

PHILADELPHIA (Dec. 11, 2023) - At their Whitney M. Young, Jr. Empowerment Luncheon, the Urban League of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA) applauded community leaders while also calling for further action.

Chad Lassiter, the executive director of Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, was the Urban League’s keynote speaker at the event, which took place on Friday, Dec. 8th. During his remarks, he emphasized persistent housing disparities faced by Black Americans despite the 1968 Fair Housing Act. Lassiter stressed that discriminatory practices persist, leading to homelessness and reduced homeownership among Black communities, echoing the ongoing need to address housing inequality.

CHATTANOOGA (Dec. 11, 2023) - The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN) celebrated its 41st annual Equal Opportunity Day breakfast recently.

The event took place at the University of Tennessee’s Chattanooga campus on Thursday, Dec. 7th. The school was also honored as a community impact award recipient for its support of Urban League initiatives such as the Volunteer Income Tax initiative, among other Urban League programs.

Also honored at the breakfast was the City of Chattanooga – the city was recognized with the Inclusion by Design award for its commendable business practices and community engagement efforts at City Hall.

ELYRIA (Dec. 5, 20230 - The Lorain County Urban League (Elyria, OH) wants to stop the violence.

Marking a significant step in the community's efforts to address and prevent violence, the Urban League will begin its violence intervention efforts this coming January.

The Urban League’s Angela Lee shared that they have recruited three violence interrupters and a social outreach worker, with plans to commence training soon and actively engage with the community at the start of the new year.

WILMINGTON (Dec. 5, 2023) - The Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League (Wilmington, DE) wants police officers to take accountability.

The Urban League is collaborating with several groups to establish a police accountability board in New Castle County. This pioneering move, sanctioned by a recent ordinance from County Council, signifies a momentous stride towards positive change and justice.

Jennifer Thompkins, the Urban League's president & CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the board's formation.

“We are absolutely thrilled about the establishment of this New Castle County police accountability board, as it marks a monumental step in the right direction,” she said.

LOUISVILLE (Dec. 5, 2023) - The Louisville Urban League (Louisville, KY), highlighted significant achievements in its latest impact report. Demonstrating its ongoing commitment, the nonprofit unveiled remarkable figures: over 500 graduates from the Kentuckiana Builds program, placement of over 200 seniors into jobs, and the support of 88 new homeowners.
