The Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League Seeks Accountability from Police

WILMINGTON (Dec. 5, 2023) - The Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League (Wilmington, DE) wants police officers to take accountability.
The Urban League is collaborating with several groups to establish a police accountability board in New Castle County. This pioneering move, sanctioned by a recent ordinance from County Council, signifies a momentous stride towards positive change and justice.
Jennifer Thompkins, the Urban League's president & CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the board's formation.
“We are absolutely thrilled about the establishment of this New Castle County police accountability board, as it marks a monumental step in the right direction,” she said.
The board's core aim is to foster better understanding and collaboration between the community and law enforcement. The board will have13 members, including voting and non-voting representatives, who will convene regularly to review police policies, handle misconduct complaints, assess use of force instances, and analyze arrest and misconduct data.
External organizations will nominate voting members, emphasizing community involvement in the oversight process.
Thompkins highlighted the board's dedication to ensuring equitable policing, particularly for marginalized and minority communities, striving for civil rights parity and fairness for all citizens.
County Executive Matt Meyer underlined the board's significance in enhancing accountability and ensuring that governmental and law enforcement actions align with the community's interests.
“Government must be accountable in every way in every community. That applies to me. That applies to our police officers. County residents now have a seat at the table when it comes to law enforcement accountability. This new democratic body will have insights and make important recommendations to improve public safety for New Castle County residents.”
“This long-awaited development demonstrates our society’s collective commitment to positive change,” declared Thompkins. “With its creation, we can have a process that is dedicated to reviewing, addressing, and aiding in updating policy and practices within the police department. Moreover, it symbolizes a significant turning point in our ongoing pursuit of justice and fairness for all members of society.”
