ST. PETERSBURG (Dec. 5, 2023) - The Pinellas County Urban League (St. Petersburg, FL) has played a pivotal role in administering the Weatherization Assistance Program, which helps residents make vital improvements on their home.

Facing a broken air conditioning unit in Florida's sweltering climate, Burke sought assistance and was directed to the Urban League's program by a neighbor. This federal initiative, initiated in 1976, focuses on enhancing energy efficiency for low-income households through various improvements such as insulation, duct sealing, and HVAC system repairs.

“That $223,000 that we received in October of this year will allow us to expand these programs in helping additional clients who aren’t necessarily already prepared for the weatherization programs,” said Urban League President and CEO Nikki Gaskin-Capehart. “A lot of the local contractors that are here have had a major impact on the lives of our clients through this type of work.”

The program's impact is substantial, with over 11,000 individuals serving in Pinellas County since its inception. With increased funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal, Florida received $93.6 million, contributing to expanding the Urban League's program.

Burke, a beneficiary of the program, received crucial upgrades to his home, including a new air conditioning unit, energy-efficient lighting, and more, significantly improving his living conditions, particularly due to health concerns. The program targets those at 200% of the national poverty level, prioritizing seniors, and individuals with disabilities, ensuring vital support reaches those who need it most.
