Urban League Leaders Demand a Halt to Weaponozation of Racial Gerrymandering in Texas
New York, Austin, and Houston (July 31, 2025) — As Texas lawmakers reconvene for a special legislative session to redraw congressional maps, the leaders of the National Urban League, the Austin Area Urban League and the Houston Area Urban League are sounding the alarm on the continued weaponization of redistricting to dilute Black political power.
National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial, Austin Area Urban League President and CEO Quincy Dunlap, and Houston Area Urban League President and CEO Judson W. Robinson III issued the following statement:
“The Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan reaffirmed that states must protect communities of color from racially discriminatory maps. Texas, however, continues a decades-long pattern of violating the Voting Rights Act.

The August employment report reveals a slowing labor market that is beginning to reflect the uncertainty clouding the broader economy. Employers added 73,000 jobs in July, the smallest monthly gain in ten months. This follows a downward revision of previously reported job growth over the past year, subtracting more than a quarter of a million jobs from what had been believed to be stronger gains. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.2 percent, but the tone of this report is markedly more subdued than in previous months.
Jasmine Crockett Is The Voice Of A New Generation, And She Is Ready For The Moment

“When you have people that are this extreme, they will do anything and everything to maintain power. The only thing that will stop them is us.” – Rep. Jasmine Crockett
We are living through a moment that demands clarity, resolve, and truth. Across this country, communities are calling for leadership that understands the stakes, challenges the status quo, and delivers for those most often left behind.
In Texas, that leadership has a name: Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
Since stepping onto the national stage, Rep. Crockett has made it clear that she is not in Washington to warm a seat. She is there to fight for justice, for access, and for the voices too often silenced in our democracy. She speaks not for spectacle, but for substance. She represents a new generation of Black leaders who combine deep community roots with legislative rigor and moral clarity.
Medicare and Medicaid at 60: A Legacy at Risk
Medicare and Medicaid have protected Americans’ health for 60 years, but now that legacy is under threat.
On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Medicare and Medicaid Act into law, expanding health care access for millions of Americans. These landmark programs, part of the Social Security Amendments of 1965, changed lives then and continue to do so today.
Ayanna Pressley Proposes Codifying DEI in the Federal Government
Trump administration policies have brought us to the point where we could return to the America of segregated bathrooms, said the National Urban League’s President, Marc Morial at Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s unveiling of her Equity in Government Act on Wednesday.
National Urban League Declares’ State of Emergency’ for Black America in 2025 Report
- Read more about National Urban League Declares’ State of Emergency’ for Black America in 2025 Report
In its most urgent warning to date, the National Urban League has declared a “state of emergency” for democracy and civil rights in the United States. The organization’s 49th annual State of Black America report, unveiled at its conference in Cleveland, Ohio, outlines what it describes as a deliberate, coordinated campaign to reverse decades of progress for Black Americans. “A democracy willing to destroy itself rather than deliver justice is a democracy in crisis,” the report states. “The work is difficult. The road is long,” National Urban League President Marc H. Morial added. “But we know from experience that the arc of history does not bend toward justice on its own—it must be bent by those with the strength and will to see it through.”
Community Developers Unite at the People & Places Conference
The National Urban League is one of five national community development organizations co-hosting the People & Places Conference and Capitol Hill Day. We invite community developers from across the country on October 5–7 in Washington, DC.
Check out the conference sessions, which explore how community developers can continue to provide affordable housing, strengthen local economies, and support communities during these challenging times. Interactive sessions and activities will nurture connection and well being. On Capitol Hill Day, we will deliver a united message to Congress about the need for community development funding and the local impact of federal cuts. Participants will get significant training on how to advocate effectively.

Urban League Gets Ready for 23rd Year of Shoes for School Event
As students in East Tennessee get ready to go back to school, the Knoxville Area Urban League (Knoxville, TN) is getting ready to host their 23rd annual "Shoes for School" event.
Shoes for School helps make sure that students have what they need ahead of the new school year, offering items like shoes, backpacks and other school supplies. Thanks to local partnerships, the Urban League is able to offer students even more this year.
KAUL has teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank to provide food for kids. They've also formed partnerships with local barbers to provide haircuts for students, and for the first time, they'll offer dental check-ups this year as well.
Director of Education and Youth Services at KAUL Carly Hammonds said the event not only gets kids ready for school, it makes them feel good ahead of the new year.
