Urban League Condemns Unauthorized Military Strike on Iran
NEW YORK ( February 28, 2026) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today condemned the Trump administration's unilateral U.S. military attack on Iran, carried out without congressional authorization and in violation of the Constitution.
"Launching acts of war without congressional authorization violates the Constitution and undermines the democratic checks and balances that exist to prevent exactly this kind of reckless escalation," Morial said. "History has shown, again and again, that military action in the Middle East without a clear strategy leads to prolonged conflict, civilian suffering, and the loss of American lives."
While Iran's government must be held accountable for human rights abuses, Morial noted, there is no national security justification for the strikes; in fact, they risk destabilization in the region and retaliation against U.S. troops.
"Diplomacy—not bombs—offers the best chance to resolve," Morial said.
"Congress must immediately reassert its constitutional authority over matters of war and peace. Any further military action must be debated openly, authorized by Congress, and subject to rigorous oversight."
