NEW YORK (March 15, 2024) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and National Action Network President and Founder Rev. Al Sharpton today sent the following letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, requesting a meeting on the humanitarian crisis in Haiti:

As leaders of two of the nation’s historic organizations dedicated to civil and human rights and social justice both domestically and internationally, we urgently request to meet with you regarding the evolving humanitarian crisis in Haiti.

Morial and League of United Latin American Citizens CEO Juan Proaño called on state legislators to pass S.B. 50, the Stopping Malevolent Altercations Regarding Traffic Stops (SMART) Act.

NEW YORK (March 12, 2024) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today thanked retiring Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge for her years of extraordinary service and the Department’s record of successful partnership with the Urban League.

“Thousands of struggling and marginalized Americans are homeowners today because of Secretary Fudge’s dedication and advocacy,” Morial said. “She has been one of the great champions of the Black Homeownership Collaborative, which I am proud to serve as national co-chair.  Her work to end discriminatory home appraisals, through the Interagency Task Force on Property Appraisal and Valuation Equity, is helping to close the racial wealth gap.”

CINCINNATTI (March 11, 2024) - The Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati OH), in collaboration with Brighton Center, the Community Action Agency, and the Gaskins Foundation, is celebrating the graduation of the first cohort of Black Women in Tech program participants.

This groundbreaking initiative aims to increase the representation of women of color in the tech industry by providing both entry-level technology skills and advanced training. Supported by key partners like JPMorgan Chase, Google, and the Workforce Innovation Center of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, the program offers a unique opportunity for women to enter or advance in the tech sector.

SPRINGFIELD (March 11, 2024) - The Springfield Urban League (Springfield, IL) is embarking on an exciting initiative called the Freedom Project, in collaboration with the National Parks Service (NPS) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

 This innovative program is designed to focus on historical education, literacy, leadership skills, and civic engagement among young individuals. Zhavier Harris, the marketing and communications manager for the Springfield Urban League, emphasized the project's aim to empower youth by bridging the gap between past struggles, like the journey from slavery to freedom, and their present realities, instilling a sense of pride and empowerment in their history.

MADISON (March 11, 2024) - The Urban League of Greater Madison's (Madison, WI) Black Business Hub recently hosted a poignant discussion featuring Dr. Richard Harris, who shared his experiences with racial discrimination and his efforts to preserve South Madison as a safe haven for Black families.

During the chat hosted by Dr. Ruben Anthony, President and CEO of the Urban League, Harris recounted his upbringing in 1930s Madison, where he learned valuable lessons from his father about compassion and from his mother, a member of the Women of South Madison, about fighting racial discrimination. Harris fondly remembered the strength of the Black women in his community who stood up against injustice.
