WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 11, 2022) -- President Biden today announced his intent to nominate Susie Feliz, National Urban League Vice President for Policy and Legislative Affairs, to be Assistant Secretary for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, Department of Commerce.

The U.S. Department of Commerce promotes job creation, economic growth, sustainable development, and improved standards of living for all Americans by working in partnership with businesses, universities, communities, and the nation's workers.

“In her two decades of experience on Capitol Hill, Susie has worked tirelessly, tenaciously, and effectively to advance racial equity and economic opportunity,” National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said. “Her deep expertise and understanding of public policy have been instrumental in securing the National Urban League’s priorities in legislative proposals and building effective strategic partnerships within the private sector, trade associations, and other civil rights and racial justice organizations.  President Biden could not have chosen a more effective advocate to promote the administration’s policies and priorities.”

In her current role at the National Urban League, Feliz is responsible for directing and overseeing the Washington Bureau’s policy team in the development of public policy priorities and advocacy strategies that advance the National Urban League’s economic empowerment and civil rights agenda.  She promotes the Urban League’s policy objectives externally through strategic advocacy before Congress and the Administration as well as through targeted education and outreach to business leaders, advocacy organizations and other key stakeholders and partners.

“Susie has been an invaluable member of the National Urban League movement and our Washington Bureau family for nearly a decade. She will remain a member of our family always, and we are thankful for her service,” said Joi Chaney, Executive Director and Senior Vice President for Policy & Advocacy. “We are so excited about the prospect of her talent, expertise, and passion for centering the underserved being brought to the Department of Commerce, where she will serve the nation. We are proud of you, Susie.”

Prior to joining the National Urban League, Feliz served as an aide to former U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and as legislative director to Representatives Joe Baca of California, Al Green of Texas, and Karen Bass of California, and led the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association.

A graduate of the University of Denver, Feliz earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the George Washington University. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with her husband and their two sons.
