Knoxville Urban League CEO Receives Honors

KNOXVILLE (Oct. 31, 2022) – The Knoxville community is not done honoring Phyllis Nichols.

On Thursday, Oct. 27th, at the Urban League’s Equal Opportunity Awards Gala, the Urban League announced that it was setting up a scholarship in her name.

The Knoxville Urban League (Knoxville, TN) CEO, Phyllis Nichols, announced her retirement back in June.

The scholarship, named the Phyllis Young Nichols Scholarship, will help area students who need financial help receiving a college education. The Urban League said that Nichols will help determine eligibility. The Urban League hopes to assist one student on a yearly basis and will include more students as they get more funding.

Los Angeles Urban League Holds Graduation for Medical Assistant Program

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 31, 2022) – The Los Angeles Urban League (Los Angeles, CA) held a graduation ceremony for the UCLA Medical Assistant Program recently.

In a 400% increase over last year, there were eight students graduating. The Urban League, via its supportive platform, enabled the students to enter the program to earn a livable wage. All graduates have been offered employment throughout the UCLA health portfolio.

The program teaches its students the importance of listening and advocating for their patients, which is a vital aspect of the program. Diversity and advocacy are main tenets of the program and are a part of the students’ training.
