City Partners with Urban League for NJ Census Awareness Day

The city hosted high school seniors from across the region for a special Census Awareness Day event on Saturday, leveraging a partnership with the Urban League Guild of Essex County (Newark, NJ) and the New Jersey chapters of the Urban League Young Professionals as part of an ongoing effort to ensure Newark is counted in the 2020 census.

Held at Rutgers-Newark Business School, the event invited students to learn about college choices along with census job opportunities through a day of workshops, orientations and activities. The city hopes it can influence more parents to participate in the census by educating youth.

Lolitta Kirby, president of the Essex County branch of Urban League, said that as part of the NJ Census Awareness Day event, participating students were asked to compete in a video contest demonstrating the importance of the census. The winners will have a chance to appear in the city’s upcoming census commercial.

District Hall, a center in Seaport, buzzed with excitement this weekend as inspirational business figures told stories of individuality, authenticity and relationship-building. They were all seeking to answer one question — how do you build a legacy?

The Young Professionals Network of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (Boston, MA) hosted their 8th Annual Leadership Development Conference on Saturday. The conference aims to equip Boston’s next generation of business professionals of color with the leadership, financial and personal skills they need to create an enduring legacy of success in their careers.

Kristen Halbert, acting president of YPN-ULEM, said the conference was designed specifically to address professional development among young people of color, a niche she said is lacking in Boston’s overall discussion of business.

Financial Literacy is Not the Problem

A recent "60 Minutes" segment covered how JPMorgan views extending credit to black entrepreneurs.

"Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, is testing out a new kind of business investment in the city of Detroit. The idea grew out of Dimon's interest in changing the way the bank was engaging in philanthropy."

— Leslie Stahl, opening her "60 Minutes" segment

Apparently, the first thing that springs to mind when Dimon wants to lend money to black people in Detroit is "philanthropy." To that end, JPMorgan extended not only credit but educational and informational resources for budding entrepreneurs.

Address Affordable Housing Crisis, Educational Inequity & Voter Suppression, President Morial Tells Presidential Candidates

NEW YORK (November 19, 2019) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial urged the Democratic candidates for President participating in tomorrow’s debate to address the issues of housing affordability, educational equity and voter suppression.

“Housing affordability in the United States is in crisis.  Public schools are more segregated than any time since Brown v. Board of Education. And the voting rights of Black and Brown Americans are under constant siege from opponents of democracy. Yet the views of the candidates for President are largely unknown to communities of color on these issues,” Morial wrote in a letter to the candidates.  “Tomorrow when you take the stage for the Democratic presidential debate in Atlanta, I hope you will fill this glaring void in our national discourse.”
