The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (St. Louis, MO) hosted another food drive for families in need.

At least 4,000 families were helped on Saturday. 

Saturday marked the 20th weekend distribution put on by the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis.

Each week they are packing vehicles all over the metro area full of food, toiletries, safety equipment, and other household items.

This week they’re also giving away school supplies.

Fox 2 and Kplr 11 want to help so General Manager Kurt Krueger presented a $15,000 check on behalf of the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation to Urban League President and CEO Michael McMillan to help with the distribution efforts.

2,000 boxes of produce were given to Louisville residents Saturday in the name of Breonna Taylor.

Tamika Palmer, Breonna Taylor’s mother said the service reflects who her daughter was.

“This is the type of stuff she lived for,” Palmer expressed. “To help anybody, so to do this in her honor, it just shows her character.”

The free farmers’ market was held in the Louisville Urban League’s parking lot. People were able to pick up produce boxes on a first-come, first-serve basis. Organizations like Until Freedom led the day.

“We’re also going door to door, we found some seniors who are immobile, we took boxes to them to drop it off,” Tamika Mallory, the Co-founder of Until Freedom explained. The group also said they visited the family of Trinity Randolph, the 3-year-old girl who was shot and killed Friday afternoon.

With John Calipari among 74 coaches taking part, the John McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative is now taking applications for Future Leader opportunities at schools across the country.

Calipari will fund six positions at the University of Kentucky, UK announced Monday. Information about the program and how to apply can be found at MinorityLeaders.org.

Calipari has spoken of the program as a way for minorities to gain access and opportunities for work in athletic departments. On multiple occasions, the UK coach said he considered the program as a way he could make a difference in dealing with this country’s systemic racism.

The idea sprung from the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other people, he said. Those killings sparked protests of this country’s history of systemic racism.
