National Urban League Congratulates Labor Secretary Walsh and HHS Secretary Becerra On Their Confirmations
NEW YORK (March 24, 2021) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement regarding the confirmation of U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and Heath and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra:
“After a year of living in this deadly pandemic, we’ve seen the disproportionate economic, social, and health impact on African-Americans, people of color, and those living in poverty. As we begin to emerge, the National Urban League welcomes and congratulates two leaders who champion equity in health care and economic opportunity, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, on their confirmation to the Cabinet.
“Marty Walsh understands the necessity to provide our essential workers with a living wage and has spent his career defending the rights of workers to organize. As Mayor of Boston, Marty appointed people of color to half of the seats in his cabinet and signed an executive order expanding municipal opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses.
“Xavier Becerra spent his tenure as attorney general of California and Congressman fighting for healthcare access for women and immigrants. He’s been a staunch defender of the Affordable Care Act and pledges to increase access to care during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
“The National Urban League looks forward to working with both of these esteemed Cabinet members.”
