Milwaukee Urban League (Milwaukee, WI) hosted a virtual roundtable Wednesday afternoon to discuss stress and various health disparities affecting Black women through various avenues.

Straight Talk on Women’s Health, moderated by President and CEO of Milwaukee Urban League Dr. Eve M. Hall, dived into the factors affecting Black women and how they contribute to prevalent health issues in the community.

One of the major culprits is systemic oppression, explained Gina Green-Harris, director of UW School of Medicine and Public Health for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships. This can present itself in many forms, from housing problems to inaccessible quality healthcare to even lack of community grocery stores, Green-Harris said.

The Urban League of Middle Tennessee (Nashville. TN) teamed up with Amazon, the Mayor John Cooper's office, Insurance Boys BBQ, and Mt. Zion Baptist in Antioch on Saturday to provide 500 meals in Nashville.

The Urban League also helped people register to vote and they got people to fill out the 2020 census.

"They also get a mask too, because we want to continue to let the good people of Nashville know to not only mask up we need to vote up and we need to count up," Kenya McGruder of Urban League said.

Depending on which entrance drivers used to enter the roundabout driveway to the Urban League on Sunday afternoon, they were greeted with either the rat-a-tat of the Thunder Drummers or the thumping bass of a Perry Broadcasting DJ booth. Either way, they were in for a fun treat as the sights and sounds of the Thunder’s final voter registration drive came into full view.

The Thunder partnered with the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City (Oklahoma City, OK) for its last voter registration event before the Oct. 9 deadline. Without ever leaving their cars, people could drive up to the booth and pick up a clear Thunder bag filled with everything necessary to register to vote­ – a voter registration form and a pre-stamped and addressed envelope for simple mailing. The bag also included free Thunder VOTE T-shirts and a box of face masks.

In September, private sector employment grew by 877,000, state and local employment declined 231,000 and the unemployment rate fell to 7.9%.  The leisure hospitality industry gained 318 thousand jobs, two-thirds of the total job growth. Most industries showed some job growth.

If you want to get a heated debate going, start talking about the reasons for the wealth gap between Black and white Americans. Everybody has an opinion.

Numbers tell a story. According to the Brookings Institution, in 2016, at $171,000, the net worth of a typical white family was nearly 10 times greater than that of a Black family, $17,150. 

For more than two decades, gay bars, especially those owned by people of color, have been disappearing. Historically, these spaces were where the LGBTQ community gathered to find romance, make long-lasting friendships and engage in community activism. Throughout the 1980s, there were more than 1,500 such bars, a number that has declined steeply since the late ‘90s, with fewer than 1,000 existing today, according to a study published last year by Oberlin College and Conservatory professor Greggor Mattson.
