Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2022) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and New York Urban League President and CEO Arva Rice released the following statement after a gunman injured New Yorkers during a shooting at the 36th Street train station:
SPRINGFIELD – In partnership with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the local NAACP, the Springfield Urban League (Springfield, IL) will try to bring needed health screenings to underserved communities.
The Health DEPOTS program is a program that aims to create safe environments for people to take charge of their health through improved health literacy.
Marcus Johnson, President of the Urban League, said, “increasing access to health care in underserved areas is one of many ways that we address health inequities. COVID-19 has increased existing gaps in care. This partnership and community health care outreach strategy is designed to build a bridge that reduces it.”

Event Description: Learn how to develop and manage a plan to pay off student loan debt with Katherine Welbeck of Student Borrower Protection Center.
Kat Welbeck is the Director of Advocacy & Civil Rights Counsel at the Student Borrower Protection Center where her work primarily focuses on examining the student debt crisis through a lens of racial and economic justice. Prior to joining the SBPC, she worked in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s External Affairs division. She received an A.B. in Sociology and Certificate in African American Studies from Princeton University and J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
KNOXVILLE – The Knoxville Area Urban League (Knoxville, TN) will now start taking applications for a program that is hoping to build a pipeline of construction workers.
The Level UP Pre-Apprenticeship Program is an eight-month program what will have participants gain experience on construction sites. While also working on a full-time crew, they are also expected to attend a weekly class.
While in the program, the participants will be paid for work done.
NEWPORT NEWS – The Urban League of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, VA) has partnered with the Riverside Health System to fight racial disparities in healthcare.
They also hope to connect people with assistance and treatment to prevent serious health issues.
At the announcement of the partnership on Wednesday, April 6th, Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources John Littel commented that the state has long recognized that health is the result of a multitude of factors, not just one. Education, housing, and other factors play a part.
MADISON – The Urban League of Greater Madison (Madison, WI) has broken ground on its new project Friday, April 8th.
The project is The Black Business Hub, which is a Black-led project that will assist disadvantaged businesses and entrepreneurs by providing coaching, mentoring, loans, and other services.
At a cost of $25.5 million, this is the Urban League’s largest project, with over $18 million already raised.
Nearly 80,000 square feet, the Hub will also have space for offices and retail stores, that will offer at below market prices to support and encourage emerging businesses.
