As I stood alongside the family and friends of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Tuesday, waiting to hear the verdict in Derek Chauvin’s murder trial, I felt a combination of hope and dread.

NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE: DEREK CHAUVIN’S CONVICTION ON ALL COUNTS MARKS A TURNING POINT ON POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY

MINNEAPOLIS (April 20, 2021) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial  issued the following statement in response to Derek Chauvin’s conviction on second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter:

A thousand postal workers are expected to get vaccinated during the next few weeks, thanks to a partnership between the Urban League of Greater Kansas City (Kansas City, MO) and Samuel Rodgers Health Center.

Organizers said keeping the mail coming starts with protecting those who deliver it.

The huge processing center at 17th Street and Cleveland Avenue is in the heart of the urban core, and the postal service says more than 2,600 people work there. Most of them live in adjoining neighborhoods.

Vaccinators from Samuel Rodgers will be inoculating postal employees with the Moderna vaccine. The goal is to boost immunization rates in minority communities.

HiTouch Business Services is investing $10,000 into The Urban League of Middle Tennessee (Nashville, TN) as the historic civil rights organization celebrates its 53rd Anniversary. The office supply company's contribution will support all ULMT's programs, including initiatives that focus on diversity and inclusion in the workplace, career development, education and housing opportunities, entrepreneurship training, and economic empowerment for underserved communities.

"Through this birthday gift, we commemorate Urban League's long-standing history of bridging the economic gap and finding solutions to racial disparities."

The Memphis Urban League (Memphis, TN) is beginning another session of NextLevel, a business development program offered in conjunction with the Tennessee Urban League Affiliates, Tennessee Valley Authority and Interise. The purpose of the seven-month program, scheduled to start on April 15, is to support small business owners who wish to efficiently pursue their goals of business growth.
