NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE ASSAILS EXTREMIST SPENDING BILL THAT THREATENS TO UPEND DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, GUT AID TO CITIES, AND HOLD THE COUNTRY HOSTAGE

NEW YORK (March 13, 2025) — National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today condemned a move by the U.S. House of Representatives to force a  government spending bill through that will effectively give DOGE unchecked power to dismantle the federal government and defund the District of Columbia through September 30th.

“The District of Columbia has long been a stronghold of the Black middle class in the America,” Morial said. “Cutting $1 billion from the city’s budget not only threatens its services, it is an all-out assault on the schools, workforce, and city services that make our nation’s capital great.”

60 Years Ago This Week, The Brutality Of Bloody Sunday Struck The American Conscience “Like Psychological Lightning”

Marc H. Morial
President and CEO
National Urban League

“At times history and fate meet at a single time in a single place to shape a turning point that is man's unending search for freedom. So it was at Lexington and Concord. So it was a century ago at Appomattox. So it was last week in Selma, Alabama.” -- President Lyndon Johnson

The headline on the front page of the New York Times, 60 years ago this week, read, “Alabama police use gas and clubs to rout Negroes.

The eighth paragraph: “John Lewis, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, was among the injured. He was admitted to the Good Samaritan Hospital with a possible skull fracture.”
