Washington Wizards Partners with Greater Washington Urban League

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 8, 2024) - The Washington Wizards continue their partnership with the Greater Washington Urban League (Washington, D.C.) for the third consecutive year to promote an essay contest geared toward high school seniors.
The contest, named after Dr. E.B. Henderson, aims to encourage students from the DMV area to participate in advocating for causes or missions of community leaders or organizations that have impacted their lives positively. The competition, running from November 15, 2023, to February 1, 2024, invites students to compose 350-500-word essays highlighting the importance of their chosen cause.
This year's essay prompt highlights the achievements of Dr. E.B. Henderson, renowned as the "Grandfather of Black Basketball" in Washington, D.C., and Benjamin Banneker, a significant mathematician and astronomer involved in establishing the nation's capital's original boundary.
George H. Lambert Jr., President and CEO of the Greater Washington Urban League, said, “As one of the District’s oldest civil rights organizations, we are honored to partner with the Washington Wizards on the third annual Dr. E.B. Henderson Essay Contest. This collaboration reinforces our unwavering commitment to creating access for our students to pursue higher education.”
Monumental Sports Entertainment Foundation and The Leonsis Foundation will fund the scholarships, with the grand prize winner receiving $5,000, the second-place winner receiving $4,000, and the third-place winner securing $3,500. Additionally, the remaining seven finalists will each be awarded $2,500 scholarships.
All students who submit eligible essays fitting the contest's criteria will receive two complimentary tickets to a select home game during the 2023-2024 season, encouraging participation and engagement beyond the contest itself.
