The Urban League of the Upstate has partnered with the Upstate Area Health Education Center and chosen its inaugural cohort for its McClaren AHEC Scholars program.

“We are truly delighted to see this program come to life as one of the first manifestations of the McClaren Institute’s mission. We need this group of diverse students to enter the medical field in our state – and hopefully even back home in the Upstate,” said Gail Wilson Awan, president and CEO of Urban League of the Upstate. “We are so thankful to AHEC for the partnership and to our own Rev. Matthew Long Jr. for leading this effort for the McClaren Institute.”

Created to empower and nurture future health care leaders, the 2024 McClaren AHEC Scholars cohort consists of 10 Greenville County high school students who were chosen from the Urban League of the Upstate’s AHEC Health Careers program.
