Urban League of Rochester Sponsors HBCU Tour to DC
ROCHESTER (March 27, 2023) – The Urban League of Rochester (Rochester, NY) recently sponsored a group of suburban high school students to tour historically Black colleges and universities.
The group consisted of almost 300 students from area high schools, all from suburban areas, in which they didn’t feel a sense of belonging at their own respective schools.
Deputy Superintendent for school improvement and community engagement, Tanya Wilson-Thevanesan, helped organize the tour after students asked if HBCUs could come to their respective schools.
The tour also included stops to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as the White House and Arlington National Cemetery.
The Urban League, along with the school district and the Konar Foundation, covered almost all of the students' expenses.
Another trip is already scheduled to visit HBCUs in Philadelphia next year.
