ROCHESTER (Oct. 16, 2023)- The Urban League of Rochester (Rochester, NY) is looking towards the future.
With their partners the Rochester City School District and New York State’s Higher Education Service Corporation, the Urban League hosted an event recently at the Field House at St. John Fisher University.
The event, a part of the Urban League’s “Gear Up!” program, hopes to encourage high school students to seek higher education.
A former “Gear Up!” alum, Dyaisha Fair, who now plays basketball for Syracuse University, said, “I was an eighth grader, and an eighth grader with a dream, with a goal, with many goals. To see all of them here today is something I remember, because I was in their shoes and in their seats.”
Taurean Uthman, the Urban League’s vice president of youth and education, said, “What we hope to accomplish is to make sure that we cultivate our young people, make them feel a sense of energy and support behind this partnership.”
The program currently includes students from nine schools who the program will follow through graduation.
“I hope they can take from me, me being a role model, an example of what they can be and can become,” said Fair.
