The Urban League of Northwest Indiana Celebrates Community Leaders with Gala

GARY (Oct. 30, 2023) - The Urban League of Northwest Indiana (Gary, IN) held its Annual Diversity and Inclusion Luncheon last week.
The annual event was held on Wednesday, Oct. 25th, where they recognized individuals and organizations making a positive impact in the community. The event, which featured a keynote address by Magistrate Erika C. Stallworth, emphasized the importance of inclusion initiatives and the progress toward greater diversity in the surrounding counties.
The awards presented by the Urban League included the Minority Business Award to Dr. Marion Williams, the Moving the Needle Award to Dr. Danita Johnson of Edgewater Health, the Youth Award to Jeffrey Edwards from the Gary Community Partnership Corporation, the Community Award to Mrs. Linda Jones representing the Gary Historical & Cultural Society, and the Leadership Award to Mike and Mary Martinez of Hannah's Hope.
The Lifetime Award went to Leigh Morris.
"While we have made significant strides in helping create more diverse and inclusive settings across the counties we serve, our work is far from done," said Dr. Vanessa Allen-McCloud, President and CEO of the Urban League. "Embracing and respecting one another’s differences and beliefs is part of the narrative. The ultimate goal is for diversity and inclusion to become commonplace and not an initiative that has to be implemented on so many fronts."
