Urban League Movement Helps 500 Families with Hurricane Ida Relief Efforts

On the weekend of September 24th, volunteers from affiliates in over seven states came to New Orleans to assist with the Hurricane Ida relief efforts. Urban Leaguers, including a large contingent of Young Professionals, came from across the country - some by chartered bus from Houston, others by car and air. Upon arriving in Houston, Urban Leaguers went straight to work. For several hours, they packed up bags of food, water, and clothing.
The next day, community members joined Urban Leaguers to help distribute cases of water, tarps, diapers, PPP Kits and children’s coats over the course of several hours to cars lined up outside the Ninth Ward Community Center. At the end of it all, volunteers had helped give supplies out to over 500 families in need that weekend.
"Our affiliates are where the rubber meets the road," said Herman Lessard, Jr., Senior Vice President, National Urban League. "We couldn't have the service and support that we have now if it wasn't for all of our affiliates from across the country."
In addition to the tremendous efforts of our volunteers, affiliate leadership also stepped up. The Houston Area Urban League (Houston, TX) President and CEO, Judson Robinson, gave a check to the Urban League of Louisiana (New Orleans, LA) President and CEO, Judy Morse, out of their own natural disaster account. Pepsico, Lowe’s, and Home Depot all gave of much needed supplies that enabled the giveaway.
