Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis Welcomes Union Leaders
ST. LOUIS (July 10, 2023) – The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (St. Louis, MO) joined other community groups in welcoming the North America Building Trades Unions at an event stop.
The event, which was organized by the Missouri Works Initiative, the Missouri AFL-CIO, and the Saint Louis Building and Construction Trades Council, really emphasized the importance of unions, not only locally, but nationally.
Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League was scheduled to speak at the event but was held due to weather and flight delays. Michael P. McMillan, President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, along with Traci Scott, Vice President of Workforce Development at the National Urban League, spoke in Morial’s place.
Of the National Urban League, Scott said, “We’ve been round since 1911 and workforce development has been the baseline of what all of what the Urban League has done and does today.”
She also spoke on the importance of unions and connects the country’s lack of support of unions with Black participation in the middle class, saying, “it’s not of no consequence that we’ve seen a waning in the participation of African Americans in the middle class itself.”
McMillan also spoke, saying that the Urban League is proud to participate in the generation that “finally fixes this issue (of exclusion).”
He continued to say, “We’ve been talking about this for many, many decades; we have made many efforts over the years to be about change and do something significant.”
