ST. LOUIS (May 1, 2023) – The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (St. Louis, MO) just made a huge step in helping Black women with businesses.

The Urban League just announced a partnership with Walmart for three years, with a goal of getting Black women-businesses into stores.

Already, inaugural classes have begun, part of a year long program that will also have a graduation ceremony at its conclusion. The program is open to entrepreneurs that have been in business for two years.

Other cities that are participating in the partnership with Walmart are Atlanta, Cleveland, and Cincinnati.

At the announcement, Urban League President and CEO Michael McMillan said, “St. Louis can be the Atlanta of the Midwest. Having significant thriving businesses that provide employment giving back to the community and making a difference. All while stimulating economic growth in the St. Louis region.”

Aleta Grimes Mitchell, director at the Urban League, said, “We want to help Black women business owners accelerate their business. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

McMillan stressed the importance of having a corporate partner like Walmart in this endeavor.

“It’s major to have corporate partners like Walmart to help fund and grow our initiative in supporting Black women-owned businesses and put some of these products in its store.”
