ST. LOUIS – Even a month after the disastrous flood that hit St. Louis, there is still a great need for assistance for flood victims.

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis held an event this past Saturday, August 20th, to aid those still suffering from the flood. Thousands of families showed up to the event.

Vice President of Public Safety for the Urban League, James Clark, said of the event, “We’re just happy to be here and happy to be a part of this solution.”

The drive was held at the Urban League offices, and hearing people’s stories about the flood, left Clark feeling ‘heartbreaking.’

“Many families were impact by the flood, but many families have never recovered from the pandemic,” Clark pointed out.

One of those impacted by the flood was former Urban League staff member, Mary Hayes, whose garage and basement were completely flooded.

“It was very devastating,” Hayes said. “It was kind of scary because when I kept seeing the water rising, I thought it might get into the apartment, but it did not make into the apartment. I was thankful for that.”

Even after the scheduled end of the event, Urban League volunteers continued to serve the community, giving away all the food and cleaning supplies they had.

Said Clark, “We want people to take away a sense of hope, and then we want the people that we touch to go out and touch others.”
