MADISON (April 3, 2023) – The Urban League of Madison (Madison, WI) hosted what could be the next generation of STEM geniuses this past Friday, March 31st.

Game Design and Coding Day, in its sixth year, is an event open to middle and high school students to get them interested in careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

The event usually occurs during the school district’s spring break to provide a safe and educational environment for students.

President and CEO of the Urban League, Ruben Anthony, along with Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, were also at the event.

“I think it’s really important to get young people engaged in the STEM fields and this is a fun way to do it, “ said Mayor Rhodes-Conway. “It can be their path to higher education and a career. Two of my brothers are in coding and I want to encourage kids to do something they enjoy and that could also be a potential future for them.”

One of the students has already decided on a career path.

Leon Warren is a 12-year-old who already has an idea of the career path he wants to take as he gets older.

“I want to learn how to program a video game,” he said. "It would be a game where you’re saving the world from pollution.”

That is music to Anthony’s ears.

“We have repeat students that come back two or three times. Some of the kids will tell us that they’re interested in becoming a game designer. When we hear that, we know we’re making a difference.”
