URBAN LEAGUE LEADERS "HORRIFIED AND OUTRAGED" BY ATTACK ON REP. OMAR DURING TOWN HALL
NEW YORK and MINNEAPOLIS (January 27, 2026) — National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and Urban League Twin Cities President and CEO Marquita Stephens issued the following statement in response to the attack on U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar during a town hall at Urban League Twin Cities headquarters:
“We are horrified and outraged by the attack on Rep. Omar, and grateful that neither she, other elected officials, or the other attendees were seriously injured. Tonight's town hall was a community gathering where information about pressing issues was shared, constituent concerns were addressed, and true grassroots democracy was at work. We are proud that the attacker's gesture of hatred and fear did not deter our mission of peace and understanding.
"The entire Urban League community extends our full support to Rep. Omar, and our admiration for the courage she displayed in continuing to engage with the community despite this unacceptable incident. Urban League Twin Cities will join Rep. Omar in filing a criminal complaint against the attacker.
"Safety, respect, and open dialogue are foundational to our mission. We remain committed to ensuring that our facilities and events are places where all people can speak, participate, and be heard without fear.”
