PITTSBURGH (Feb. 26, 2024) - The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh’s (Pittsburgh, PA) 28th annual Ronald H. Brown Leadership Awards dinner was a resounding success.
The event, held at the Rivers Casino on Friday, Feb. 16th, had more than 400 guests contributing to raising over $400,000 for the organization's programs and services. Chaired by Blayre Holmes Davis, the second lady of Pennsylvania, and Bryan Iams, the event featured a cocktail reception and a silent auction, followed by heartfelt gratitude expressed by the chairs for the attendees' support.
The main portion of the dinner began with a moving rendition of "Lift Every Voice" performed by Faith Otey, setting the tone for an evening dedicated to celebrating leadership and service. Artist Kyle Holbrook's creation, auctioned for $1,700, served as a symbolic representation of Pittsburgh's youth, adding an artistic touch to the event. Local journalist Andrew Stockey adeptly guided the proceedings as the evening's emcee.
Highlighting the significance of community service and fostering racial justice and inclusion, this year's awardees included Leah Lizarondo for community service, Alexandra Jones for emerging leadership, and Derrick Tillman and Carmen Anderson for civic leadership.
Carlos T. Carter, President of the Urban League, emphasized the impact of these great leaders.
“The four dynamic leaders here this evening have addressed pressing societal issues that create a more equitable region for African Americans and other marginalized communities,” he said.
Notable supporters in attendance included Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, Mayor Ed Gainey, and esteemed community leaders, including several state representatives.
