Urban League of Greater Madison Brings Back Unity Picnic
MADISON – For the first time since the pandemic started, the Urban League of Greater Madison (Madison, WI) held its Unity Picnic.
The Unity Picnic is the Urban League’s an event that they’ve held for the past eight years. It is designed for the community to get together and learn about the community service programs that the Urban League is responsible for.
One of the big names this year was former Governor Jim Doyle, who has made a point to attend the event every year it’s held.
According to Doyle, “The Urban League’s emphasis on really creating wealth in the black community, developing entrepreneurship, getting people really trained for good paying jobs, I mean it’s critical to everything we’re doing. So I’m happy to support them.”
The event got its name after the shooting of Madison teenager Tony Robinson was shot by police, recounted Urban League President and CEO Ruben Anthony.
Said Anthony, “We thought that we needed to have unity. A time that we can come together and not really think about all the serious stuff but have a change to rub elbows with neighbors from multiple communities.”
