ATLANTA (March 20, 2023) – Last week, the Urban League of Greater Atlanta (Atlanta, GA) revealed their first “State of Black Georgia” report.

Some of the findings in the report found that 36% of Black students in the state were failing to read at a third-grade level. Another standout of the report was that while the Black population in the state was 32%, the State Department of Corrections reported that 50% of inmates in 2021 were Black.

President and CEO of the Urban League, Nancy Flake-Johnson, spoke of the report in an interview with Georgia Public Broadcasting.

She said that the report focused on the major urban areas across the state: Albany, Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah. The report focused on five areas that reflect a good quality of life – education, economics, health, social justice and civic engagement.

Flake Johnson said, while traveling around the state to research the report, they did a composite ranking of those five areas that mattered the most to their constituents. Economics landed at number 1; education was second, social justice was third, health, fourth, and civic engagement was fifth.

Civic engagement was the key here, she remarked, because it is the rise of the civic engagement that will really help Black Georgians.

The President and CEO said that they were going all across the state throughout the year to meet with corporations, legislatures, philanthropists and leaders of the Black community to conduct briefings.
