Urban League of Greater Atlanta Organizes ‘Super Saturday’ for Homebuyers

ALTANTA (June 26, 2023) – This past weekend, the Urban League of Greater Atlanta (Atlanta, GA) hosted an event to assist prospective homebuyers navigate the housing market.
The annual event, named “Super Saturday,” had workshops and services, along with experts, to help prospective homebuyers wade through the home buying process. Once completed, participants receive a certificate that enables them to apply for down payment assistance programs.
Nancy Flake Johnson, President and CEO of the Urban League, said, “To buy a home, there are a lot of players. It’s really important as a first-time homebuyer that you take advantage of this free education so that you can learn the process, get prepared.”
The Urban League is part of a larger collective that is being led by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, which is collaborating with other community organizations to create 6,000 homeowners of colors in the city. The city of Atlanta is currently facing a 26% disparity gap between black and white homeowners.
“Historically, there have been a number of systems in place that have made it difficult for Black families to own land in the early stages in the 1800s and 1900s right after Emancipation. And then it became more sophisticated in the form of redlining, even being able to get homeowner’s insurance,” said Flake Johnson. “Most recently, there’s been several studies that have shown that appraisals have been biased, and not just a little bit biased, but hundreds of thousands of dollars that directly impacts our ability to build wealth.”
The housing market can be difficult to wade through, but the Urban League hopes that the resources provided at this event will clarify things.
“And really, it’s about sustaining homeownership,” she said. “Not just getting the home but keeping the home.”
