ROXBURY (Feb. 5, 2024) – The closure of a Walgreens pharmacy in Roxbury has prompted collaborative efforts between the city and the local community to ensure residents have access to medications.

Despite resistance from residents, Walgreens permanently closed its Roxbury location, leading community leaders, including the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (Roxbury, MA), to step in and address the resulting gap.

Rev. Miniard Culpepper, an advocate for keeping the pharmacy open, said, “This is a matter of life or death.”

The Urban League quickly stepped in to address the issue.

In partnership with the City of Boston and ride-share companies, the Urban League is implementing a short-term solution – they will provide free Lyft rides to seniors and others in need of the next closest Walgreens pharmacy, which is about a mile away.

Recognizing the challenges faced by seniors who would have to walk and take a bus to reach the pharmacy, the initiative aims to ensure accessibility for those requiring medication.

President and CEO of the Urban League, Rahsaan Hall acknowledges the historical challenges faced by communities of color.

“Historically, communities of color have been overburdened by the lack of resources, or the imposition. Our communities are resilient, but we’re also tired,” he said.

Looking towards more sustainable solutions, community leaders are exploring long-term alternatives, including the use of locally owned family pharmacies and community health centers.
