The Urban League of the Upstate (Greenville, SC) nears the completion of its $3.5 million campaign for the McClaren Institute of Health & Quality of Life

The local nonprofit organization is transforming the McClaren Medical Shelter in downtown Greenville into a wellness, education and outreach center for Black and underserved communities.

“The McClaren Institute will provide essential services and inspire the community to come together and invest in long-term solutions for health and wellness,” said Gail Wilson Awan, president and CEO of Urban League of the Upstate.

The Urban League held a brunch to celebrate the progress of its capital campaign on Feb. 13. The campaign for the McClaren Institute was subdivided into two categories: renovation funding and programming funding.

Less than $300,000 needs to be raised to reach the Urban League’s renovation fundraising goal. The funding would outfit the last portion of the project, the Cultural and Historical Literacy Center. Located on the McClaren Institute’s first floor, the center will include interactive exhibits and displays to honor the contributions of Black citizens who have shaped the Upstate.

Several corporations and individual donors helped the local nonprofit meet its construction fundraising goals and complete the facility’s build-out and renovations. Some of the recent contributions to the project were from the Hearst Foundation, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, the Jolley Foundation and the Symmes Foundation.
