Urban League of Central Carolinas Hosts Mother Day’s Event

CHARLOTTE – This past Saturday, May 7th, the Urban League of Central Carolinas (Charlotte, North Carolina) provided one hundred women from their workforce development program a Mother’s Day event. The invited women were treated to a luxury experience, including photoshoots, styling, and makeup.
The event was in partnership with GEICO and Heart of cabi.
Heart of cabi stylists helped women find clothing choices for prospective job interviews. GEICO, for its part, helped by giving away donated cars through its Recycled Rides program.
Daisha Vereen, who takes part in the Urban League’s workforce development program, left not only with an interview-ready outfit, but also a car.
“I left everything behind in Connecticut around COVID time when I first moved down here, so I didn’t have anything just me myself, but two suitcases, so for me to have this car it means a lot,” she said.
Vereen is on her way to becoming a nurse, which is a career that is becoming very in-demand in North Carolina. Other careers such as medical coding, HVAC training, and data processing are areas in which the Urban League is busy trying to find people jobs. Trying to raise African-American income levels and employment via job training and placement services is the Urban League’s goal.
Teddy McDaniel, President and CEO of the Urban League of Central Carolinas, said, “We want to not only improve economic mobility but there’s also a racial wealth gap. And so a lot of the work we’re doing is to help our clients become economically self-sufficient.”
