SPRINGFIELD – In partnership with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the local NAACP, the Springfield Urban League (Springfield, IL) will try to bring needed health screenings to underserved communities.

The Health DEPOTS program is a program that aims to create safe environments for people to take charge of their health through improved health literacy.

Marcus Johnson, President of the Urban League, said, “increasing access to health care in underserved areas is one of many ways that we address health inequities. COVID-19 has increased existing gaps in care. This partnership and community health care outreach strategy is designed to build a bridge that reduces it.”

Medical students will accompany a doctor visiting various sites and check for health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and other health concerns. They will also provide advice about healthier lifestyle choices.

Reverend Ray Newman’s congregation at the Fresh Visions Community Church happily received the program when they arrived. The pastor of the church was aware of any fears that his community has with seeing a physician.

“Some are afraid to go to a doctor’s office or see doctors for some reason. But they are willing to come to the church and get these screenings. I think it is important to meet people where they are comfortable and willing to come.”
