Springfield Urban League Begins “Freedom Project”
SPRINGFIELD (March 11, 2024) - The Springfield Urban League (Springfield, IL) is embarking on an exciting initiative called the Freedom Project, in collaboration with the National Parks Service (NPS) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
This innovative program is designed to focus on historical education, literacy, leadership skills, and civic engagement among young individuals. Zhavier Harris, the marketing and communications manager for the Springfield Urban League, emphasized the project's aim to empower youth by bridging the gap between past struggles, like the journey from slavery to freedom, and their present realities, instilling a sense of pride and empowerment in their history.
Part of the Children's Defense Fund Freedom School, which is overseen by the Urban League, the Freedom Project aims to enhance students' reading abilities and foster strong leadership qualities. This year, the program anticipates the participation of 260 students, providing them with invaluable educational and leadership-building opportunities. Harris highlighted the organization's broader objective of not only empowering communities but also transforming lives and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow through such initiatives.
In addition to its educational focus, the Freedom Project will offer students insights into potential career pathways within NPS and IDNR, exposing them to various job opportunities and career trajectories. By integrating historical education with practical career exploration, the program seeks to broaden students' horizons and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary for future success.
