FARRELL (Feb 12, 2024) – The Shenango Valley Urban League (Farrell, PA) recently partnered with Farrell senior Hayven Hilton as her senior project for a blood drive on Friday, Feb. 9th.

The event, held in the Harriett Morrison Gym, aimed to collect blood specifically for individuals with sickle cell disease. Hilton collaborated with various organizations alongside the Urban League, including the Red Cross, the Youngstown chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc., and the Mercer County NAACP, to bring the initiative to fruition.

The Farrell Area School District contributed to the event by supplying space for the blood drive in the gym, enabling multiple people to donate blood simultaneously. Hilton's motivation stemmed from personal connections to individuals affected by sickle cell disease, recognizing the critical need for blood transfusions in managing the condition.

The blood drive garnered significant community interest, with individuals from diverse backgrounds volunteering to donate blood. Dr. Erin Houston, President and CEO of the Urban League, noted the importance of raising awareness about sickle cell disease and commended the diverse representation among donors.

Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and national shortages in blood supplies, the event saw an overwhelming response, exceeding initial expectations. With 68 units of blood collected by Friday evening, the blood drive proved the community's willingness to support those affected by sickle cell disease.
