PITTSBURGH (Feb. 13, 2023) – Pittsburgh Urban League (Pittsburgh, PA) CEO Carlos T. Carter spoke at a church this past Sunday, Feb. 12th to speak on how the Urban League is focusing on economic opportunity for the community.

Speaking at the Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Larimar for Urban League Sunday, Mr. Carter spoke to the congregation on how the Urban League, entering it’s 105th year of operation, is looking to prioritize economic opportunity.

Urban League Sunday is a celebration that the Urban League hosts during Black History Month that is held at a different church yearly. It highlights the longstanding partnership between the Urban League and Black churches in the Pittsburgh region.

“Civil rights aren’t civil rights when you can’t afford a loaf of bread,” he said.

In his remarks, he also mentioned the importance of affordable housing and capital for Black-owned businesses.

Among the speakers at this year’s celebration was Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, the city’s first Black mayor. Mayor Gainey focused his remarks on how to “save our youth.”

“Help us save our children. Nobody is coming to save our children. Only us.”
