The New York Urban League or NYUL (New York, NY) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) are pleased to partner with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin to host a Back-to-School event in support of the September 11th National Day of Service.   This event is generously supported by partners Spectrum, Enterprise, Macy’s and Alpha Phi Alpha Harlem Chapter.  The Back-to-School event will support elementary and middle public school students in District 5 schools in Harlem.  The event is free to the public and will be held at P.S. 175, 175 West 134th Street from 12-3pm.

Students received a book bag with new school supplies that have generously been made possible by our corporate supporters.  Fidelis Care is providing vaccine information and a van where community members can be vaccinated.  There will also be information on programs and services for children and families available at the event.

New York City Geographic District No. 5 is a public school district located in Central Harlem. District 5 has 9,975 students in grades PK, K-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1. According to state test scores, 37% of students are at least proficient in math and 42% in reading.  It is also a community hit hard by COVID in terms of cases, deaths and impact on the local economy.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin, ““I am so pleased to support the National Urban League and NY NAACP in their September 11 Day of Service this year. The school supplies that are being distributed as a part of this program will be a welcome help to New York families as they return to class this year.”

Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer said "It's been twenty years since thousands of lives were lost on September 11, 2001. We remember that in our grief and tragedy we came together and helped each other, as neighbors, as friends, and as New Yorkers. We need that now more than ever, in the present, as we overcome a different tragedy and as we look back and commemorate our fallen. That's why I am honored to join Arva Rice, Hazel Dukes, Pamela Stewart, and the National Urban League, the NAACP State Conference, and Community School District 5 to provide supplies for our students and volunteers as we observe a solemn day of remembrance and service."

“The New York Urban League is so pleased to provide school supplies to students in one of the most high-need areas of the City.  Our partnership with the NAACP, Community School District 5 leadership, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin and Spectrum, Enterprise, and Macy’s are the types of partnerships that are needed to see our communities to and through the pandemic,” said Arva Rice, President and CEO of the New York Urban League.

“The NAACP New York State Conference is proud to collaborate with the New York Urban League and District 5 leadership, Pamela Stewart in this activity ensuring that our children return to a safe and learning environment with tools that will assist them in preparing for a productive school year, said Hazel N. Dukes, President, NAACP State Conference.

“Thanks to the generous support and partnership with the NAACP New York State Conference and the New York Urban League, Community School District 5 students will receive much-needed school supplies, as we welcome them back to the school community.  We truly appreciate the help and support of all of our sponsors,“ said Pamela Stewart, CEC5 President and Manhattan Borough President Appointee.

"Providing our students in Community School District 5 with instructional materials during this challenging time when they need them the most will play a significant role in school preparedness and class participation. Our students can enter their classrooms across the district feeling confident that they have the tools they need to be successful," said Robin Davson, Acting Superintendent
