Statement issued by Marc Morial CEO of the National Urban League and Former Mayor of New Orleans

The National Urban League movement and community stand with the Elkins family and the Shreveport community after this weekend’s tragic mass shooting.

“I am stunned and in disbelief at this weekend’s tragedy in Shreveport. The senseless death of eight beautiful, innocent children is a shock and a blow during these already difficult times,” said President and CEO of the National Urban League, Marc H. Morial. “My family, as well as the National Urban League family, will hold the family members and the entire Shreveport/Bossier community in prayer as the long and difficult process of grieving and healing begins.”

Like the rest of America, we opened our eyes to the tragic news that eight young lives were taken in an unimaginable act of violence. No child should ever be exposed to gun violence. We believe that making our communities and our children safer starts with providing families with the support they need for loved ones struggling with their mental health.

We also believe in stronger gun safety laws. Red flag laws in particular have been proven to protect our young people and communities by keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of individuals who pose a significant danger to themselves or others.

We are keeping this family, the Shreveport community, and this country lifted at this time.
