NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE PRESIDENT & CEO ISSUES STATEMENT FOLLOWING U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION TO UPHOLD VOTER SUPPRESSION PROVISIONS
Washington, D.C. (July 1, 2021) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Brnovich V. Democratic National Committee:
“Voting rights are under attack in this country, making it harder for Black and Brown people to exercise their fundamental voting rights granted under the U.S. Constitution,” said Marc H. Morial, President, and CEO of the National Urban League.
“Since the November 2020 elections, state legislatures across the country have introduced hundreds of restrictive voting laws that would prevent voters from casting their ballots freely, safely, and equally.”
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee to uphold two suppressive voting provisions in Arizona will make it that much harder for people to vote, will embolden more states to pass suppressive legislation and will directly impact Black and Brown communities.”
“The Supreme Court majority is retreating from its responsibility to protect access to the ballot box, which is a detriment to our democracy and this nation’s electoral system. The need for Congress to reform the filibuster and pass the For the People Act and John Lewis’ Voting Rights Act is critical to protecting our rights, now more than ever.”
