Washington, D.C. (December 8, 2022)  Today, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, released the following statement on Brittney Griner’s release from Russia’s custody this morning:

"Brittney Griner’s release is one that is well overdue. For over five months, she has been wrongfully detained and used as a political pawn during an ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Brittney's detention has been an indefensible and agonizing attack not only on Griner herself, but her wife, and her family

We join Brittney’s family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones in deep appreciation of the Biden- Administration for its continued efforts to secure Brittney’s freedom and making sure that she returns home safely, where she rightfully belongs.

On behalf of 92 affiliates and the Urban League movement, we send our heartfelt congratulations to the Griner family and will respect their privacy during this time.”
