National Urban League & Houston Area Urban League Call for Investigation Into Fatal Ice Shooting
NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE & HOUSTON AREA URBAN LEAGUE CALL FOR INDEPENDENT AND TRANSPARENT INVESTIGATION OF FATAL ICE SHOOTING IN HOUSTON
Civil Rights Leaders Stand in Solidarity and Sympathy with Community and Family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo
NEW YORK and HOUSTON (July 9, 2026) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and Houston Area Urban League President and CEO Judson W. Robinson III issued the following statement in response to the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by federal immigration enforcement agents:
“Whenever a life is taken by law enforcement or federal agents, especially during a civil immigration enforcement action, the public deserves a full, transparent, and independent accounting of the events that led to that tragedy.
“We demand a full, transparent, and independent investigation into the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Houston, including the immediate preservation and public release of all available body-camera footage, surveillance video, dashcam recordings, and other evidence related to Mr. Salgado Araujo death.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family. By all accounts, Mr. Salgado Araujo was a loving husband and father, hard-working small-business owner, and longtime member of his community whose death has left his family, friends, and neighbors grieving an immeasurable loss.
“At a moment of heightened concern about immigration enforcement and community trust, accountability is essential. Federal officials have offered a version of events they believe justifies the use of deadly force. But communities across the country have seen too many such justifications crumble in the face of evidence that emerged later. We stand with those calling for answers and reaffirm the principle that no loss of life involving government agents should occur without full public scrutiny.”
