NEW YORK (March 12, 2021) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to the Senate’s confirmation of Attorney General Merrick Garland, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge and EPA Administrator Michael Regan:

“The Biden administration’s commitment to justice extends beyond our courts and the rule of law. It lives and breathes in the policies and ideals in each of his cabinet nominees. The National Urban League would like to congratulate Attorney General Merrick Garland, a champion of civil rights, Marcia Fudge, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Michael Regan, the first Black man to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Judge Garland’s commitment to racial justice and fight against domestic terrorism is a breath of fresh air at this critical juncture in our history. As our nation continues to face threats from far-right extremists and foreign election interference, we are confident in the newly confirmed attorney general.

“We are also excited to welcome Congresswoman Marcia Fudge as the new secretary of HUD and pledge to partner with her on the agency’s renewed investment in communities of color. And for the first time in history, the EPA will be led by a Black man with a focus on environmental justice.

“The National Urban League is committed to being an active partner in our nation’s commitment to racial justice and equity.”
