Washington, D.C. (November 30, 2022) — Today, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, released the following statement congratulating Congressman Hakeem Jeffries for being elected to serve as Minority Leader for the House Democratic Caucus. He is the first Black lawmaker in history to lead a major political party in Congress:

“Today, we congratulate Leader Jeffries on a historic election as the first Black lawmaker to lead a major political party. Not only does this election symbolize the growing representation of diverse membership in Congress and our country, but it also creates a positive image for young people in our communities who may aspire to serve in positions such as this.

“Leader Jeffries has the depth of professional experience and knowledge to lead the Democratic party and its next generation of members. Since 2013, he has been a tireless advocate for communities of color and the barriers and issues that plague them. As the new Democratic Minority Leader, I believe he will bring the same spirit and strength to continue to fight for all Americans and work alongside his colleagues across the aisle.

“On behalf of our 92 affiliates across the country, we commend the House Democratic Caucus for electing Leader Jeffries and ensuring their commitment that leadership at the highest levels of our government reflect the rich diversity of all Americans. We send our sincerest congratulations and look forward to working with Leader Jeffries and other members of Congress next term.”
