National Urban League Celebrates as United States Supreme Court Swears in Associate Justice Kentanji Brown

Washington, D.C. (June 30, 2022) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial made the following statement as the United States Supreme Court swears in its first Black woman – Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“History has been made today, and I could not be more thrilled to finally say, that for the first time in the Supreme Court’s 233-year history, our country will have a Black woman serving as an Associate Justice. Not only is this a win for Justice Jackson and her family, but it is a win for Black women, the Black community, this country, and our ancestors.
“We thank President Biden for his continued leadership and upholding his promise to the American people to ensure the Court looks more like the nation it serves. Associate Justice Jackson’s swearing-in is historic, not only because she will be the first Black woman to serve as a Supreme Court Justice, not only because she has unique experience as a public defender, but also because for the first time, four women will serve on the nine-member court, bringing it closer to gender parity.
"As evidenced in her confirmation hearings, her experiences and expertise will offer a critical, authentic, strong, and thoughtful voice on the Court at a time when it seems out of touch with the American people.
“Judge Jackson has proven time and time again that she is eminently qualified to take on the role of Associate Justice. This country deserves a Supreme Court that reflects the rich diversity of the American people and serves their interests, not a political ideology. Today’s ceremony brings us one step closer to realizing that goal.
“The National Urban League movement was proud to fight for her, and we look forward to the joy of celebrating this historic milestone with the nation.”
