National Urban League and Michigan Affiliates Devastated By Michigan State Mass Shooting
NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE AND MICHIGAN AFFILIATES DEVASTATED BY RECENT MASS SHOOTING AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
NEW YORK and MICHIGAN (February 15, 2023) – Today, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, Charles Anderson, President and CEO of the Urban League of Detroit and South Michigan, Kyra Wallace, President and CEO of the Southwestern Michigan Urban League, and Eric Brown, President and CEO of the Urban League of West Michigan made the following statement in response to the tragic mass shooting that took place at Michigan State University:
“The news of yet another mass shooting, which claimed three lives and injured five others, always come with the same questions: what motivated the gunman? How was he able to obtain a weapon? But the overriding question – why does this keep happening? – has already been answered: because the lawmakers charged with keeping America safe refuse to act.
“On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Parkland shooting, another community has been devastated with gun violence, making it the 67th mass shooting this country has had this year. This is unacceptable. How many more mass shootings need to take place before our representatives get the message? How many more children need to lose their lives before we act? Our children should not have to fear for their safety every time they go to school.
“We demand that Members of Congress come together and prioritize passing comprehensive gun safety measures. They have their failed their constituents time and again. If they do not act, they must be held accountable during the next election.
“On behalf of our 92 affiliates and the Urban League movement, our hearts and deepest sympathies are with the families who have lost loved ones and with the Michigan State University community. We will continue to use our collective voice to offer support for families and communities affected by this tragedy.
