National and Los Angeles Urban League Leaders Stand with Peaceful Protesters. Condemn Violence and Overreach

NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES (June 11, 2025) — National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and Los Angeles Urban League President and CEO Cynthia Mitchell-Heard issued the following statement in response to civil unrest provoked by ICE raids:
"In recent days, Los Angeles has witnessed powerful protests and painful disruptions in response to immigration enforcement actions and the deployment of the National Guard. These events have sparked deep concern, emotion, and public outcry.
"The National Urban League and the Los Angeles Urban League stand with those raising their voices for justice and affirm the right to peaceful protest. These demonstrations reflect real pain and urgent calls for humanity in our policies and practices.
"While we unequivocally support peaceful assembly, we do not condone violence or destruction. History has shown us that when protests turn destructive, attention shifts away from the root causes and toward the chaos—undermining the movement for change.
"We commend local law enforcement for exercising restraint. Their understanding that a heavy-handed response can escalate tensions is a lesson hard-learned and deeply important in this moment.
"Our strength as a community lies in our unity, our commitment to truth, and our resolve to pursue justice without harm. The National Urban League and the Los Angeles Urban League stand on the legacy of leaders like John Mack and Whitney M. Young Jr., who championed civil rights through peaceful and determined advocacy.
"Now is a time for clarity, compassion, and collective resolve. We urge all Angelenos to stay engaged, stay peaceful, and stay committed to building a city where every person’s dignity and voice are honored."
