National Urban League President Marc Morial Thanks Speaker Pelosi for Her Leadership and Friendship
NEW YORK (November 18, 2022) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stepping down from her leadership role:
“It has been an honor and privilege to collaborate with Speaker Pelosi since her earliest days in Congress, when I was a Louisiana State Senator, throughout my two terms as New Orleans Mayor and the last two decades with the National Urban League. She has been a role model for a generation of leaders and an icon for women everywhere.
“She has withstood a generation of personal attacks and demonization from the GOP that have led to death threats and the recent attack on her husband, yet she has never cowered and she has never blinked. Her determination and skill shepherded the Affordable Care Act through Congress when nearly every other member wanted to abandon it. She has been both fearless and fierce.
“Throughout her career she has demonstrated toughness without personal nastiness. She has risen above the rancor and insults leveled at her without responding in kind. She exudes grace and is the personification of the iron fist in a velvet glove.
“On behalf of the National Urban League and our nationwide network of affiliates, I thank Speaker Pelosi for her years of dedicated service and her friendship to the League.”
