NEW YORK (February 8, 2023) –Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, has joins Chicago’s Sun-Times as a contributing columnist.

I’m excited to be joining the Sun-Times family,” Morial said. “I look forward to sharing my views on civil rights and urban issues, along with the prominent role Chicagoans have played and continue to play in the ongoing movement for racial justice.”

His inaugural column, which was published today, reflects on his long-time connection to the city of Chicago and how traveling with his father cemented the love he has for the windy city.

He writes, “I jumped at every chance to accompany my father to Chicago to spend time with personal heroes of my young life such as Jesse Jackson, newly appointed to head up the Chicago branch of Operation Breadbasket, the economic empowerment arm of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or John H. Johnson, who was building Ebony magazine into one of the nation’s most influential publications. Those trips with my father cemented my lifelong affinity for Chicago.”

Morial, who is a former Mayor of New Orleans and former President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, also reflects on how his father’s career inspired his decision to enter public service and how Chicago politics, including former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington’s career, helped shape his perspective.

Morial will be offering commentary twice a month. To read more of the first column, click here, or visit the Chicago Sun-Times website at www.chicago.suntimes.com.
