National Urban League's Marc Morial and National Action Network's Rev. Al Sharpton Welcom New FBI Headquarters in Maryland

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 10, 2023) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and National Action Network President Rev. Al Sharpton joined together to welcome the new FBI headquarters to Prince George’s County in Maryland. This comes one year after both groups, along with the Greater Washington Urban League, penned a letter to the General Services Administration emphasizing the impact the headquarters would have on one of the state’s most underserved counties. The headquarters is estimated to bring 7,500 new jobs to the area:

“Establishing the new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt is an incredibly beneficial development for both the local community and our nation. This state-of-the-art facility will have a far-reaching impact on enhancing our nation’s safety and security and fostering economic growth and development. We want to acknowledge the efforts of Administrator Robin Carnahan of the United States General Services Administration and other federal, state, and local officials for their commitment throughout the process to revitalize a historically underserved area.

“Prince George’s County is home to the largest suburban majority Black population in the region and one of the largest in the nation. Though there is a talented and educated workforce in the county, this community has historically been left out of federal office space allocations and other investments from the federal government. This new investment is an important first step that will help address the historic failure to invest equitably in Prince George’s County.

“In line with the federal government’s commitment to racial equity, it is our hope that the same principles that drove the selection of Greenbelt as the headquarters’ new location will be used to drive the development of the facility as we move forward. This is an important first step and we are eager to be engaged every step of the way.”
